In the Big Bowl of Life I Just Want Some Good Ice Cream

“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!”

Remember that old saying about ice cream? It’s pretty appropriate with the hot weather we’ve been having. I’ve always liked ice cream and have eaten way too much of it over my life time, but hey, somebody’s got to keep those dairy bovines producing milk.

Sam likes ice cream too. We have a pretty symbiotic relationship regarding ice cream; I eat it and he licks my bowl clean afterward (No! I do not put it back in the cupboard then).

Wanna’ know what I favorite ice cream is? I thought you’d never ask. If you guessed coffee you’d be wrong. Here are my top 10 favorites (is that enough to cover them all?).

1. Rocky road. Can’t beat that combination of chocolate, marshmallows and nuts. I don’t like brands that skimp on the marshmallows or substitute marshmallow cream for the little white lumps.

2. Spumoni. I’m talking about real spumoni, like the Italians make: pistachio ice cream and nuts, cherry ice cream and chocolate or rum raisin with real raisins. I only wish I could find spumoni at the store as easily as I can find rocky road.

3. Neapolitan. I love having vanilla, strawberry and chocolate together. If I want to I can just scoop one flavor at a time out of the carton. Neapolitan makes great banana splits too.

4. Coffee. Of course. No brainer here eh?

5. Coconut/pineapple. Hard to beat this treat in the summer time. But when I eat this flavor I have bad nightmares afterward about basking in the tropics (did I say bad?).

6. Fifty/fifty. You know, orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream. Boy that’s a refreshing treat. Fifty/fifty with root beer sherbet and vanilla ice cream is excellent too but hard to find.

7. Strawberry. With big, real chunks of strawberries. Right now I think Tillamook makes the best strawberry.

8. Maplenut. This used to be one of my mother’s favorite – that and butter brickle. I’m not a butter brickle fan though.

9. Rootie tootie fruitie – although that was a soft ice cream we use to get at Foster’s Freeze when I was a kid (I was one once you know).

10. Chocolate-chip mint. This is very nice for cleansing your palate after a good meal.

That’s my list. Care to share yours?

I’m not keen on Cookie Dough or Moose Tracks or Wild Mountain Blackberry or Strawberry Cheesecake and those other foo-foo kinds of ice creams. And I don’t usually fork over the big bucks for Ben & Jerry’s or Haaggen Dazs or similar brands. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never met an ice cream I’d kick out of the old cereal bowl, especially if you offered one to me at your house. And yeah, I use a cereal bowl and a tablespoon. I’m a big boy you know?

Loving ice cream as much as I do though, I’ve never chased an ice cream truck down the street. Their music is annoying and their prices too high. Once upon a time I was married to a woman whose father was a door-to-door milkman and her family always had lots of ice cream on hand. I envied her. Kathleen’s dad was a dairyman and I believe her family had lots of ice cream when she was growing up too. I wonder if it’s just coincidence that I’ve married women who had such ready access to ice cream.

Naw! That couldn’t be the reason. And hey! Don’t you dare call me ‘Ol Butterfat Butt!
