Weather's Good Now. Let's Go Garage Sailing er, Selling

I’m gearing up to hold a garage sale. The weather’s improving enough to make me believe I might get lucky and manage to hold one on a warm and sunny weekend. Garage sales on rainy days totally suck.

One problem with a garage sale is deciding what treasure or formerly useful item(s) to get rid of. But when your garage and attic and closets become too full to save still more junk, it’s time to pedal some merchandise. Another problem is all the organization a garage sale takes: advertising, placing signs, and so on. The worst thing is deciding how to set items out in a way they’ll be noticed and snapped up by the buyers. I like to have enough tables to adequately display my wares. Lumping stuff on the garage floor or driveway just doesn’t cut it for successful “staging.”

I guess the first item I’ll try to sell will be the foam mattress I had custom made for the bed of my truck. A few years ago I bought a tent that actually fit in the bed. It’s pretty cool. But trying to sleep on the bed of the truck with an air mattress didn’t work; and that bed is so hard. So I had the cushion made. Dang thing cost me nearly $600. Now, I’ll probably be lucky to get $50 for it. Same thing happened to me years ago when I sold a couple of old MacIntosh computers. I paid nearly $3,000 apiece for those things and wound up selling them to some guy for $25 each so his kids could bang on them.

Ain’t no way I’m going to sell my marble collection or my kaleidoscopes. I won’t sell Sam either. In fact, I might have to hide him in the house. I’m not going to sell the leather couch I recently brought here from my rental in Bellingham either. That couch fits perfectly in the living room where my computer desk and bookshelves are and I love sacking out on that baby. I’ll probably sell several books - although that’s like selling my precious babies, but Kathleen’s been nagging me and I can’t buy anymore unless I make space for them.

I have a really nice glass-top dining table that I brought from the rental, and a bunch of nice wall mirrors and area rugs. Probably will sell off a few pieces of art I bought over the years too. I’m sure there are other things in the house and garage that will go for sale. I haven’t inventoried everything yet. I won’t be selling the rest of my camping gear, because sure as I do I’ll finally be able to talk Kathleen into going camping with me. I’ll have to get some kind of camper to talk her into it, I’m sure.

At least Sam likes to go camping. He and I have been a couple of times and we were able to squeeze into the back of the truck without any problem. Only problem with taking Sam camping is he gets so dirty. I wish I had a nice camper and the money to take a cross-country trip with him like John Steinbeck did with his dog Charlie. It would be cool to travel across the U.S. blogging about our adventures.

Oh well, first things first. Gotta’ gear up to go garage sailing - uh, selling. Sail on by why don’t you and drop anchor for awhile. We’ll have some really, really good deals.
