SYNOPSIS: Tam Alexander's life is peaceful and bucolic until a string of unfortunate events threatens to destroy his peace. His girlfriend dies in a vehicle accident, he shoots a man to defend his stepfather and he has to go to war in Vietnam where he must kill or be killed. In Vietnam his best friend dies alongside him in a muddy foxhole. Tam struggles not to give in to bitterness and anger because of the tragedies that have befallen him. When he returns home to the small town where he grew up his former friends don't seem to understand or care what he's been through. Good advice from a clergyman and a budding new romance put him back on the road to that place Where Once Was Peace.

 From Chapter Nine

Tam decided to put aside his feelings about Katie and all the things that were happening to him and just pretend for one night as best as he could that Marlene was his girlfriend and that they were all alone in the world in their love for each other. He would pay attention to nothing else but her. He wanted the night to be special for him too because he didn’t know what was going to happen to him in the near future and he wanted to take a good memory with him wherever he was headed.

Marlene was looking truly beautiful. Her blonde hair shone in the dance lights and lay against her red dress like soft angel hair. Was she more beautiful than Katie, he wondered? Could that be?

From Chapter Eleven

“What do you suppose Vietnam will be like if they send us there?”

“All I know is what I read and hear,” Tam said. “It doesn’t sound like a very nice place: monsoons; extreme heat; poisonous snakes; booby traps; ambushes. But I don’t think there’s much question that we’ll go there. The Marines are always the first ones in on something like that.”

“Think we’ll make it back if we go there?”

“Gees Chap! What kinda’ question is that?”

“Well, do you?”

“I’ll be praying every minute of every day that we do.”

From Chapter 14

Part of Tam regretted that he had to take the VC guy’s life. But Tam was afraid of dying too so he did not to hesitate to kill. He understood that it was a miracle he had survived. Because of that, the anger and bitterness he’d been harboring suddenly weren’t worth hanging on to any longer. God had given him the precious gift of his life and like Pastor Jack had pointed out, it just didn’t make sense to destroy himself from within.
